Ford Focus updated with electrified powertrains and fresh tech

The model promises to be cheaper to run than before

Ford has updated the Focus for 2020 with new electrified mild-hybrid powertrains and enhanced technology.

Following in the footsteps of the new Puma crossover and recently updated Fiesta, the Focus is now available with Ford’s 48-volt mild-hybrid technology on its acclaimed 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine.

It’s available with outputs of either 123bhp or 153bhp, with the latter replacing a 148bhp 1.5-litre petrol unit previously available. Ford claims this new electrified engine is 17 per cent more efficient than the old 1.5-litre – now returning 51.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 116g/km.

The system sees a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) replace a traditional alternator, and this allows energy to be recovered when the car is braking or coasting, and then storing this in a 48-volt battery pack for later use. This is where the efficiency gains are made, though it also produces an additional 24Nm of torque for enhanced responsiveness.

Elsewhere, the Focus is now available with a large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster (as seen on the new Puma and Kuga models), while later in the year the Focus will be available with ‘Local Hazard Information’. This is where you can be informed of any hazards on the road ahead before you can see them – thanks to the car being able to ‘communicate’ with other vehicles. This will come as standard as part of FordPass Connect.

Ford has made a few trim and equipment changes, too, with a new Zetec Edition replacing the Zetec, and adding extra kit – such as front parking sensors, a wireless charging pad and satellite navigation. ST-Line Edition and Active Edition models also now benefit from keyless entry and automatic wipers.

The Focus continues to be available as both a hatchback and estate, with prices now starting from £22,610 – up from £20,690. The updated range is available to order now.
