Ford Fusion facelift hints at new design for Mondeo

Ford has revealed a facelifted version of the Fusion saloon at the Detroit Motor Show, which subsequently hints at a future design update for the Mondeo in Britain.

The Fusion is the name Ford uses for its current family saloon in the US market. The design changes introduced at the Detroit Motor Show will reportedly be introduced to Britain’s Mondeo within the next two years.

Design changes

One of the most notable changes as part of the facelift is the removal of the Aston Martin-esque chrome grille. In place, the Fusion sports a sleeker, darker-toned grille which is reminiscent of the latest Ford Focus ST.

Other changes from the facelift include more sculpting of the front bumper, and slimmer, redesigned headlights. There are also new LED fog lights at the front and minor alterations to the light graphics at the rear.

A 325bhp Mondeo upcoming?

The updated Fusion shown in Detroit also receives Ford’s latest SYNC 3 infotainment system and a new Sport model with an all-wheel drive powertrain. The Fusion Sport features a twin-turbo 2.7-litre V6 EcoBoost petrol engine that produces 325bhp. Variable dampers and pothole detection technology that can prepare the suspension for sudden bumps on the road are other features on the Fusion Sport.

Whether the new SYNC 3 system or the V6-run Sport specification will reach the Mondeo here in the UK is unknown for the time being. By the time the Mondeo receives its facelift, however, there’s a good chance other new Fords in Britain will already be using the latest SYNC infotainment system.
