Ford GT production run doubled

Production of the new Ford GT supercar has been extended by two years, meaning it will be built for a total of four.

The new Ford GT has already sold out and UK customers have been chosen, but now it's emerged that more people than originally planned will get the chance to own the supercar. Ford has revealed that the production run for the GT will be extended by an extra two years to a total of four, due to strong demand.

The first production run of the Ford GT starts later this year and involves only 250 units being built. Originally, a second production run of 250 units would follow next year and that would be it, meaning just 500 examples of the GT would be sold to customers. With an extra couple of years now added, it means 1,000 examples of the Ford GT will be made in total, although the number of GT models on UK roads could be less than 100.

While the third year of production will favour those who were on the waiting list for year two but missed out, the candidate list will become more open again for the fourth and final year of production.

Ford's decision to double production of the GT comes not long ago after it emerged that the manufacturer's racing team had committed to racing the GT in championships including the World Endurance Championship (WEC) for the next four years.

The global director for Ford Performance, Dave Pericak, said: “While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors."
