Ford Ranger Raptors join fleet of UK’s largest zoo

Ford’s most capable pick-up will be put into action at the UK’s largest zoo

Two Ford Ranger Raptors are joining the UK’s largest zoo to help in a variety of tasks around the site.

The Raptor is Ford’s most extreme version of the Ranger pick-up, bringing with it a host of mechanical upgrades that make it one of the toughest off-roaders you can buy today.

And while it might have been created with the idea of jumping up and down sand dunes, it won’t have a life any easier at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo near Dunstable, Bedfordshire. Ford has given the UK’s largest zoo - which has 3,500 animals - two Raptors to help with transporting food, bedding and toys across the 600-acre site.

The Raptors have been wrapped in a special ‘tiger’ livery, which helps to make them easier to spot around the zoo.

Mike Laird, Ranger product manager at Ford of Europe, said: “The Ranger Raptor is a workhorse, but on this occasion it’s working alongside the horses. These visually striking pick-up trucks will become as much of a visitor attraction as the animals themselves, not least because Ranger Raptors stay still for photos!”

Ford has also said it is loaning ZSL London Zoo one of its new Transit Custom plug-in hybrid vans, which thanks to its 35-mile electric range and low emissions, is exempt from the London Congestion Charge and other emissions-based road schemes.
