Gumpert returns from the dead with the new Apollo Arrow

Gumpert, purveyor of some of the most unhinged and oddly-named cars on earth, is back with a new name and with a new hypercar called the Arrow.

Saved from bankruptcy and now rebranded to Apollo as a tip of the hat to the titular hypercar of the same name, the new Arrow takes Gumpert’s penchant for the radical and runs with it.

Featuring a number of fins, flares and aero scoops, the Apollo Arrow’s exterior was reportedly inspired by the F-22 Raptor fighter jet, sharks and essentially anything else that kills for a living.

986bhp bi-turbo V8

At the heart of this exaggerated Lovecraftian monster lies a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine supplied by Audi and customised to eke out a maximum of 986bhp with an earth-shredding 999Nm of torque.

Built on an updated version of the same tubular spaceframe and carbon tub design as the Gumpert Apollo, the ultra-hardcore Arrow prototype reportedly weighs in at a shade under 1,300kg.

As a result of its ungodly amounts of power and low mass, it’s able to sprint from 0-62mph in just 2.9 seconds, before tearing its way to a top speed of 224mph.

Top speed of 224mph

Although it’s still only in the prototype stage, the car’s British-led design team, still headed up by Gumpert founder Roland Gumpert, says that it’ll be ready for production by 2017.

Distinguishing itself from rivals like Lamborghini and Bugatti with its uniquely violent appearance, low weight and geometry, it will also reportedly be one of the more affordable hypercars.

Prices are estimated to start from around £710,000, and despite the fact that practicality is usually low on the priority list for automotive exotica, for your money you’ll even get power windows and sat-nav as standard.
