Hyundai lights up Seoul on World Earth Day with hydrogen-powered Nexo

The South Korean manufacturer lit up the capital’s Metropolitan Library with its eco-friendly model.

As Seoul turned the lights off at its prime tourist locations for World Earth Day 2019, Hyundai used a fleet of its hydrogen fuel cell electric SUVs to illuminate the Seoul Metropolitan Library.

Hyundai called the event ‘Empowering Tomorrow with Hydrogen’ by using its model, which emits nothing other than water, which saw the Nexos projecting footage highlighting the water-electrolysis cycle (the process that powers the model – for an hour on the library using five of its new ground-breaking SUVs.

The demonstration was the first of its kind using hydrogen fuel cell technology, and aims to showcase the cleanliness of both the cars and the process of generating the hydrogen in the first place.

Hyundai is one of few mainstream manufacturers that has been developing hydrogen fuel-cell cars, and it was the first to get them ready for the road, with its iX35 Fuel Cell arriving in the UK in 2014.

The key benefit of hydrogen to power cars is its cleanliness and zero emissions, but fuelling them takes no longer than it would a petrol or diesel car.

Hyundai announced its UK pricing for the Nexo last month, with the model being only the second mass-produced hydrogen model from the firm. Prices start from £65,995 including the plug-in car grant, which is more than conventionally-powered rivals, but simply because the technology is in its infancy.

However, its 414-mile electric range is impressive for an EV, and it comes loaded with standard safety equipment – such as 19-inch alloy wheels, a full suite of LED lights and heated and ventilated seats.

Safety will not be a concern either, with the Nexo being awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating in 2018.
