Jaguar Land Rover to build straight-six Ingenium engines

Jaguar Land Rover is to expand its range of Ingenium engines with a new straight-six option.

Jaguar Land Rover is due to expand its range of in-house built Ingenium engines to include a brand-new range of inline six-cylinder motors.

First introduced in 2014, the Ingenium range makes use of aluminium-intensive construction to improve efficiency and is Jaguar Land Rover’s first self-developed engine range.

So far, all Ingenium engines have been four-cylinders, but given the modular nature of the motors it was only a matter of time before more cylinders started to be added on.

Replacement for V6 engines

According to online reports, the new range of straight-six engines will largely replace the dated V6 motors used across Jaguar Land Rover’s range and the first is due in late 2017.

The first inline-six engine will reportedly be a 3.0-litre direct injection turbocharged unit, available in both petrol and diesel forms with outputs ranging between 275bhp and 500bhp.

Jaguar Land Rover’s engineers are said to be confident that the straight-six will complement the rear-wheel drive that remains a Jaguar hallmark, but is also suited to larger Land Rover models.

Due late 2017

Key benefits of the straight-six over the V6 include lighter weight, reduced consumption and emissions, along with a strong throwback to Jaguar’s history of building powerful inline-sixes.

It’s not yet known which cars will get the new Ingenium six-cylinder engine yet, but it’s expected that models like the Jaguar XE and XF, Range Rover and possibly even the F-TYPE will feature it.
