Mazda teaser image hints at all-new sports car

A subtle teaser image released by Mazda hints at an all-new coupe sports car from the Japanese brand.

Mazda has published a teaser image for a new sports car concept which will make its public debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in late October.

Although the dark teaser picture (shown below) gives little away, enough is shown to confirm that the concept has a sleek coupe bodystyle. Its shape is reminiscent of certain current sports cars like the Jaguar F-TYPE and the Mercedes AMG GT.

While pretty much nothing else has been confirmed, reports online suggest that this new concept could preview a new sports car from Mazda that essentially succeeds the RX-8 coupe.

In fact, it’s also rumoured that like the RX-8, this upcoming Mazda concept will feature a rotary engine. The last Mazda production car to use a rotary engine was the RX-8, which managed to offer as much as 228bhp from a 1.3-litre unit.

However, this engine’s fuel thirsty nature and failure to meet stricter emissions regulations meant the RX-8 was pulled from the UK and other European markets in 2010. Production of this Mazda was stopped altogether in 2012.

Rumours have circulated in the last couple of years that Mazda has been keen to revive rotary technology to its engines, in a way that it would still offer plenty of power but in a more efficient manner.

While the concept coming to Tokyo is not necessarily a direct successor to the RX-8 or any other Mazda from the past, it could still lay the foundations for a new flagship sports car from the Japanese manufacturer.
