Mercedes-Benz show off Vision EQ Silver Arrow concept

The single-seat concept evokes past Mercedes-Benz models and features a futuristic interior and an all-electric powertrain.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its latest concept car, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow, which looks forward in terms of technology while drawing inspiration from the past with its design.

Painted in silver, the car is reminiscent of the Silver Arrows racing machines from the 1930s and 1950s, which dominated motorsport in their respective eras.

Gorden Wagener, Daimler design officer, said: "Over 80 years ago, the historic Silver Arrows demonstrated that Mercedes-Benz was a pioneer when it came to speed thanks, among other things, to their streamlined shape.

"The Vision EQ Silver Arrow draws on that legacy. Intended for acceleration and driving pleasure, it embodies progressive luxury and provides an insight into the future of our design. As a result, the show car drives the design idiom of our new EQ product and technology brand to the top."

The exterior design is streamlined and only incorporates space for the driver, with the car measuring 5.3 metres in length. The body is made from carbon fibre and then painted in multiple layers of paint to give it the metallic look. Vents are also fitted on the side to help cool the batteries.

It also has 168-spoke rose gold wheels that run with non-rotating hubcaps and trim covering half of the wheel. Two extending rear spoilers are also built, which frame the rear brake light when not in use.

Inside, Mercedes-Benz has given the Vision EQ a traditional feel by including solid walnut surfaces along with polished aluminium and brown leather upholstery, with grey suede used on the side of the cockpit to mirror the exterior shell.

Behind the steering wheel – that has a touchscreen at its centre – is a large, panoramic screen that projects a 3D image of what’s behind, as well as ‘ghosts’ of old Silver Arrow models that the car can race against as part of the Virtual Race Coach feature.

Drivers can also choose to have engine sounds plumbed into the cabin if the electric powertrain is too quiet for their tastes.

The car sits on a chassis which incorporates the battery pack that offers a range of 248 miles. Power-wise, the car has 737bhp at its disposal.
