Mini pulls the wraps off new John Cooper Works hot hatch

The new JCW gets a more stylish look, additional standard kit and new technology

Following the unveil of the facelifted Mini Hatch a few months ago, the firm has now revealed its range-topping John Cooper Works hot hatchback.

Benefitting from the same design changes seen on the standard Hatch, the new JCW comes with a fresh design showcasing a larger hexagonal grille, along with a red crossbar. There are larger air intakes, too, while getting a sportier styling kit than the regular car, thanks to a twin-exit performance exhaust system, red Brembo brake callipers and a new rear diffuser.

Mini has not messed with the JCW’s engine, though, with the hot hatch keeping its 228bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine from before – enabling a 0-60mph time of 6.1 seconds with a six-speed manual gearbox, or 5.9 seconds with an optional Steptronic Sport automatic transmission.

There’s also a new adaptive suspension setup available, which can adjust the dampers depending on whether sportiness or comfort is desired, with changes taking less than 100 milliseconds and contributing to this new car having greater downforce than before.

Inside, the new JCW benefits from a larger 8.8-inch touchscreen, which is based on a new operating system bringing greater connected services and more modern graphics. A 5.5-inch digital dial screen is also included – this featuring on the brand’s Mini Electric and also on its flagship John Cooper Works GP hot hatchback.

Chill Red and Rebel Green remain exclusive on the JCW, with Mini introducing new Island Blue and Rooftop Grey colours to the range. A new set of 18-inch alloy wheels are also offered on the options list as well.  Rear parking sensors are also now included as standard, while a rage og new options are available – including a heated steering wheel and adaptive cruise control with a stop and go function, which helps in slow-moving traffic.

Expect a slight increase on the outgoing car’s £27,115 starting price, with first models set to arrive in showrooms in the next couple of months.
