Mitsubishi’s market-leading plug-in hybrid SUV, the Outlander PHEV, has passed 100,000 sales in Europe in just over four years.

The petrol-electric hybrid originally went on sale in October 2013, and since then has racked up a lot of interest in the UK and on the continent.

In fact, 34,108 Outlander PHEVs were sold in the UK in that time, with the next-best market almost 9,000 units behind in terms of sales – the Netherlands has been home to 25,399 models.

That sales performance has helped make the Outlander PHEV the most popular plug-in on the British market today, with the car accounting for 7,407 sales of the overall 47,263 in the UK in 2017. It has led the UK plug-in market for the last four years.

Norway (13,429), Sweden (9,957) and Germany (6,743) were the next popular markets.

After receiving a minor update at the start of 2017, the Outlander PHEV comes with 33 miles of all-electric range, an improved regenerative braking, lower CO2 emissions and a newly-introduced EV priority mode that ensures the petrol engine and climate control aren’t turned on so that you can prevent emissions and conserve battery life.

Drivers can choose from three driving modes – EV Drive, Series Hybrid and Parallel Hybrid – with the Series option using the petrol engine to charge the battery and the latter Parallel mode using both the petrol engine and electric motor in tandem.

The PHEV’s 0-60mph time is just under 11 seconds, while its top speed is 106mph. Its quoted emissions is 41g/km CO2 and fuel economy is also good at 166mpg – helping save fuel costs and reducing emissions.

Prices for the Outlander PHEV start from £34,749.
