Volkswagen has revealed the first images of the third generation Touareg, which is due to be unveiled in Beijing on 23 March.

Based on the VW Group MLB chassis and underpinnings, the first impressions of the new Touareg show that it will be sleeker than the previous generation and is likely to incorporate many of the latest design features found on VW models, such as the modern grille found on the Arteon.

Volkswagen said that the new Touareg will include “a phalanx of innovative assistance systems gives it a maximum degree of safety and comfort” and “one of the largest digital cockpits in its class, the Innovision Cockpit.”

The German brand also confirmed that the model will be available with air suspension, rear-wheel steering and roll stabilisation.

Although power options have yet to be hinted at, the Touareg is expected to come with at least one electrified hybrid option, with turbocharged diesel and petrol engines likely to make up the majority of the range.

The current version of the large SUV has been on sale since 2010 – making it the VW model most in need of an update – and has been part of the brand’s line-up since 2002.

Sales are expected to begin in April, with deliveries due to begin towards the end of the second quarter this year.
