New BMW one-off is from another world

The M850i Coupe Night Sky features materials from meteorites and patterns inspired by extra-terrestrial bodies.

The BMW Individual service helps customers specify their perfect BMW model – using the most luxurious materials available to create special editions and one-offs.

With an intense meteor shower taking place earlier this week, BMW has produced a unique version of its M850i Coupe that incorporates pieces of meteor into the control pieces, while also fitting surfaces with designs inspired by constellations and other celestial bodies.

Genuine meteoritic material has been used on the central console, the start/stop button, the Steptronic transmission selector lever and iDrive touch controller – while the illuminated door sill finishers have also been inlayed with meteor.

Coming with geometric Widmanstätten surface patterns that can only be made by meteors, the special pieces of equipment were designed in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics – which is based in the same town as BMW Individual, Garching near Munich.

The interior also features a tri-colour leather trim for the seating, with white, blue and silver Merino leather used throughout – the same Widmanstätten patterns seen on the meteor pieces used in the seat stitching.

LED lights have also been installed in the central armrest to replicate the effect of a constellation.

The exterior paint work is finished in non-metallic black and San Marino blue – with three layers of clear coat applied to add further depth to the colour.

Specially-designed brake callipers have also been fitted, which are 3D printed from aluminium and were produced by the BMW Motorsport team.

But underneath all these special design touches is the M850i, which is fitted with a 523bhp, 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine paired to an eight-speed transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.
