McLaren is set to grow its sports car range over the next couple of years with the launch of new convertibles based on existing models, according to several online reports.
Recently, the international launch took place for the 570S coupe, a new McLaren sports car and the first of their more accessible Sports Series models. During this launch, McLaren reportedly revealed to attending journalists that two more variants will be announced in the future, one for 2016 and the other for 2017.
It is rumoured that a convertible derivative of the 570S, called the Spider, is the car due for arrival in 2017.
In addition to these reports, however, it’s also believed that another convertible model based on the 675LT (Long Tail) is being considered by McLaren.
The McLaren 675LT is a lighter, track-focused version of the McLaren 650S supercar. Both belong in the company’s Super Series product range (above Sports Series), but the 675LT is quicker with its 0-62mph sprint time of just 2.9 seconds. McLaren built around 500 coupe examples of the 675LT earlier this year.
Due to high demand, McLaren is reportedly going to make more 675LT models next year and a Spider convertible version of the car is being considered time around. It’s even rumoured that McLaren will scrap the coupe derivative of the 675LT in the future as the company believes the Spider offers greater appeal to potential buyers.
One upcoming new model that has been officially confirmed by McLaren is the 540C coupe, which sits below the 570S in McLaren’s Sports Series range and will represent the ‘entry-level’ car in McLaren’s product line-up.
