New Mercedes-Benz GLS unveiled

New version of large SUV comes with seven seats, a fresh design and a suite of high-end tech.

Mercedes has taken the covers off its all-new GLS.

The new iteration of the flagship SUV comes with a longer wheelbase to allow for more interior space, and as the S-Class of the SUV world, it comes with the highest level of tech and comfort features on offer.

Available as either a six- or seven-seater, the GLS comes with electric-folding and adjustable rear seats, which when flat allows for up to 2,400 litres of storage. When fitted with six seats, the middle row is taken away and replaced by two luxury chairs for improved passenger comfort.

Five-zone climate control comes as standard, while customers can choose to add either the Rear Comfort package Plus or the MBUX Rear Sear Entertainment System – which both add infotainment displays to the rear section of the cabin.

The exterior comes with a refreshed look that includes a new grille, multibeam LED headlights, LED taillights and chrome detailing. The square rear end design is kept from previous editions.

Whether customers go for a petrol or diesel unit, the GLS comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard alongside Airmatic air suspension – while Mercedes offers a series of driver assists, such as Active Distance Assist and Active Stop-and-Go Assist.

Prices are yet to be confirmed for the new GLS, but expect them to start around the price of the outgoing version – close to £74,000.
