Audi has unveiled the latest of its hot ‘S’ models – the new SQ8.
Following the same pattern of all recent S cars from the S4 through to the S7, the German manufacturer has adopted diesel power for its powerful range-topping SUV.
The SQ8’s power plant is a large twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 TDI engine, which churns out 429bhp and 900Nm of torque. That allows for an impressive 0-60mph time of 4.6 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission.
As with other Audi S models, the SQ8’s engine utilises an electrically powered compressor that aims to eliminate turbo lag, and this is powered by a 48-volt electric motor that forms part of the mild-hybrid setup. It essentially works by recuperating energy when the car is decelerating, and reduces fuel consumption.
The SQ8 will be available in the UK from next month, and will be offered in two trims – SQ8 and SQ8 Vorsprung – the latter being fitted with a sport differential, which can actively distribute torque between the rear wheels to help minimise understeer.

The SQ8 comes as standard with Matrix LED headlights, as well as different coloured accents to the standard Q8. Meanwhile the interior comes with super sports seats, and a black leather cabin (typical with S models). Contrast stitching, aluminium detailing and illuminated ‘S’ logos also separate this car from its standard sibling.
The portfolio of connected services and the smart two-touchscreen infotainment and climate control system is carried over from the standard Q8, too. An array of active safety features are also offered – lane assist, exit warning and crossing traffic alert, to name but a few pieces of tech on this flagship SUV.
