Nissan Leaf begins UK production

The new Leaf is being built in Sunderland and comes with an improved range of 235 miles

Nissan has begun production of next generation all-electric Leaf hatchback at its UK factory in Sunderland.

The new Leaf comes with a higher range at 235 miles – making it more practical than the previous version with 80 miles more available to you – and lots of new technology, including ProPilot driving assistance systems and the new ePedal, which acts as both an accelerator and a brake.

With production starting now, the first customers are due to get their models in February 2018.

After becoming the main hub for European Leaf production back in 2013, Sunderland has helped the production of more than 85,000 units for the European market – making it one of the best-selling EVs currently on sale on the continent.

Nissan Europe divisional vice president for manufacturing, Kevin Fitzpatrick, said: “Nissan led the way in introducing electric vehicles to Europe in 2011, and every year since then it’s been clear that more and more customers share our vision for the future of driving.

“We're excited to start production in Sunderland and to bring the new Nissan LEAF to European markets from February.”

The Sunderland plant also produces the Qashqai and Juke crossovers, as well as Infiniti’s Q30 and QX30 – with overall production in its 30-year history passing nine million overall units. This makes it the British plant with the highest number of cars produced.

Prices for the new Leaf start from £26,490.
