Peugeot 208 vs New Peugeot e-208

Peugeot’s all-new 208 supermini is launching alongside an all-electric version. We put them head to head.

Often when it comes to electric cars based on conventional petrol and diesel models, the wait for the EV can be several years longer than the standard car.

But that’s not the case with Peugeot’s new 208, which launches later in the year at the same time as the all-electric e-208 model.

This means buyers can choose the car that suits them best, rather than being ushered into a petrol or diesel version while waiting for the EV.

Here’s how they compare.

Dedicated EV services on the e-208

The new 208 introduces a comprehensive range of connected services, although it’s the e-208 which really stands out for its dedicated services that aim to support motorists in the transition from combustion engine-powered vehicles to electric cars.

Highlights include E-coaching, which is a tool in the MyPeugeot app that gives drivers advice on how to drive in the most efficient style, as well as how to get the most range out of their cars as possible. As part of Peugeot’s mobility provider ‘Free2Move’ drivers can also get a charging pass to access public charging points across Europe. A dedicated trip planning tool is also available, which allows drivers to make use of the most accessible charging points for their route.

Another innovative service the French brand is offering allows buyers to rent a different Peugeot model with a combustion engine, for occasions when their journeys are likely to far exceed the e-208’s 211-mile electric range.

Loads of safety tech on both models

Whether it’s the e-208 or standard 208, Peugeot is offering its new supermini with a broad range of safety kit as standard.

As part of the French manufacturer’s ‘Driver Assist’ package, the new 208 comes with a superb range of safety kit for such a compact model.

Tech available includes adaptive cruise control, lane-centring features, full park assist, autonomous emergency braking up to speeds of 85mph, driver attention monitoring and blind-spot warning. While some of this equipment is not fitted as standard, it really is superb just how much safety technology is available on the new 208.

Pre-heating/air-conditioning function on the e-208

Another innovative bit of tech that you’ll find on the e-208 – though not on the standard 208 - is another connected feature which can pre-programme the air-conditioning, heating and heated seats (if specified) via a smartphone app, meaning that by the time you get to the car, the interior will be just the right temperature for you.

Slash your running costs with the e-208

Peugeot’s engines are some of the most efficient you’ll find, with the 208 being offered with an efficient 1.2-litre petrol engine producing either 74bhp, 99bhp or 128bhp, or an even cleaner 99bhp 1.5-litre diesel unit.

While Peugeot hasn’t released fuel economy and CO2 figures for these, it will be the electric e-208 that buyers should choose to keep their costs low. Sure, the list price might be more than the combustion models, but the running cost savings will easily be more than that. The e-208 offers an electric range of 211 miles, which is excellent for a supermini. Electric is far cheaper than petrol and diesel (particularly for those who plug-in their cars at home) while the e-208 will also be road tax exempt.

The same stylish interior and exterior look

Peugeot has deliberately styled the e-208 to look nearly identical to the petrol and diesel model – the only tell-tale signs of its electrification being the charging flap (which in itself looks like a normal fuel cap) and ‘e-208’ badging.

The latest car is a step up in terms of design, with a curvier design, large chrome grille and LED lighting signature being key highlights, along with a range of bold colours – such as the Faro Yellow and Vertigo Blue shades pictured.

But one of the highlights is the cabin, which not only improved in quality, but also spaciousness. Digital dials, a standard-fit seven-inch touchscreen (10 inches on range-topping models) also give the cabin a particularly in feel.

In short, whether it’s 208 or e-208, both sit at the top of their game when it comes to styling, both inside and outside.
