Peugeot has pulled the covers off its new stylish 308 hatchback, which gains hybrid powertrains for the first time, as well as a higher-quality cabin.
Rivalling the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, the new 308 looks to head further upmarket in the same vein as Peugeot’s other recent models, including the 208 and 2008.
The striking-looking model gets an imposing front end, incorporating a large grille, bold ‘claw’ headlights, and it’s also the first Peugeot to wear the brand’s recently-unveiled new logo. The new 308 also has a 55mm longer wheelbase than before – allowing for more rear seat space - while the whole car sits 20mm lower than before, too. Slim LED headlights are included across all versions, while there’s been a greater focus on aerodynamics to improve efficiency.
Inside, the new 308 gets Peugeot’s latest ‘i-Cockpit’ interior, including a large 10-inch digital instrument cluster, which is fully configurable, as well as a large 10-inch central touchscreen that’s included as standard. Peugeot’s renowned small steering wheel is also included.
Peugeot has also worked to improve quality compared to the outgoing car, with a greater focus on ergonomics, as well as additional space for the front-seat passenger thanks to a redesigned dashboard.
The French firm is also promising class-leading technology, including features such as semi-automatic lane change assist and adaptive cruise control that can change the speed based on traffic signs and also for corners.
Though boot space has dropped from 470 litres to 412 litres, Peugeot says rear space is more generous than before.
The powertrains are one of the biggest changes here, though, with Peugeot introducing a pair of new plug-in hybrids to the 308 for the first time – one producing 178bhp and the second 222bhp, with a 37-mile electric range promised. The 12.4kWh battery can also be charged in as little as two hours. More conventional engines will remain on offer, though – a 128bhp 1.2-litre petrol option and a 128bhp 1.5-litre diesel. All models are also set to use an eight-speed automatic, too.
Three trim levels are set to be available – Allure, GT and GT Premium, though full specs and pricing are still to be confirmed. Expect the new Peugeot 308 to arrive in showrooms before the end of the year.
