Porsche announces name for all-electric car – the Taycan

The firm has released early details on the name for its first fully electric sports car – previewed by the Mission E Concept.

Porsche has confirmed that its new electric sports car will be called the Taycan, as well as issuing early details of the forthcoming model.

Taycan roughly translates as “young lively horse”, a nod to the fact Porsche has had a horse on its brand emblem since 1952.

The name was announced as part of Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebrations since it started making sports cars. The firm also released a 911 Speedster Concept as part of its commemorative festivities.

It will be Porsche’s first all-electric car, and was previewed by the Mission E Concept. It’s worth noting, though, that Porsche has been building plug-in hybrid models of some of its cars for several years.

The power figures issued so far are certainly impressive, with 592bhp on tap. While Porsche hasn’t confirmed performance figures, it will be able to accelerate from 0-60mph in “well under” 3.3 seconds, and to 120mph in “under” 12 seconds. Porsche says that this continuous power will be “unprecedented” among electric vehicles.

Oliver Blume, chairman of the executive board of Porsche AG, said: “Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable – it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom.”

Porsche is also being ambitious with its range estimates, too, and claims the Taycan will be able to achieve 310 miles on a single charge.

Elsewhere, the sports car maker has committed to a  €6 billion (£5.3 billion) investment in electromobility – including the Taycan and future variants’ development, electrification of its current cars, expanding production sites as well as charging infrastructure.

The Taycan will also lead to 1,200 new jobs being created at a new factory for the model in Zuffenhausen, Germany, alone.
