Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy hot hatch revealed

Based on the latest Mégane R.S., the Trophy comes with 296bhp and is the most powerful Renault Sport production car yet.

Renault has revealed an uprated Mégane R.S. that is the brand’s most powerful production car to date.

Called the Mégane R.S. Trophy, it comes with a new version of the 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the standard R.S. that produces 296bhp and 420Nm of torque.

That increase in power is down to an improved turbocharger and exhaust system, and the engine can be paired to either a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch six-speed auto.

Based on the Megane R.S. Cup chassis that include stiff sports suspension and a mechanical limited slip differential, the Trophy also gets bi-material front brake discs, exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels and Bridgestone performance tyres.

Those additions work alongside the 4Control four-wheel steering system and four hydraulic bump stop shock absorbers.

As with previous Trophy models, the Megane R.S. version comes in Liquid Yellow paint, with Renault also adding stripes to the F1-style front spoiler.

Inside, Renault gives customers the option of adding alcantara Recaro front seats for extra support.

Nico Hülkenberg, Renault Sport Formula One driver and ambassador, said: "I have been involved in the Mégane R.S. development process since last year and I'm very pleased to see an even sportier version added to the family.

“Each of the new features on Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy offers greater sports performance and feel. It's obviously positive to have more power and better grip through the tyres and to benefit from improved braking endurance. I also enjoyed the feeling offered by the new seats: the support they provide for sports driving is excellent."

Order books for the Mégane R.S. Trophy open in the autumn, with deliveries beginning in winter.
