Renault reveals new Megane Renault Sport

This is the third generation of the hot hatchback that will also come with a Trophy version later next year

Renault has unveiled its latest model in its Renault Sport lineup – the Mégane R.S.

Based on the latest Mégane hatchback, this is the third version of the hot hatchback since 2004 and is the first souped-up hatch to come with a four-wheel steering system, which helps with stability and cornering.

Under the bonnet is a 286bhp turbocharged, four-cylinder, 1.8-litre engine that can be paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Although no official performance statistics have been released, Renault told the Press Association it will get from 0-60mph in under six seconds.

Two versions of the chassis are available to choose from, Sport and Cup, with the latter offering sportier control and performance. The Mégane R.S. also comes with a host of sporty features like sports brakes, a limited slip differential and Renault’s Multi-Sense driving modes system.

Renault has added dynamic exterior features, such as a new front grille, wider air intakes, a small ‘lip’ spoiler and a new rear bumper including a central exhaust and air diffuser. A new ‘Volcanic Orange’ body colour has also been added to the line-up.

Inside, Renault fits sports front seats in either ‘carbon fibre weave’ or Alcantara trim, a grey trim with red detail and stitching, and aluminium pedals and gear lever. The Mégane R.S. also comes with an R-Link 2 multimedia system, an 8.7-inch touchscreen display, adaptive cruise control, active emergency braking system and parking assistance systems.

From next year Renault will also be making the Mégane R.S. Trophy edition available, which will come with a 295bhp engine.

No official price has been released but expect it to start at less than £30,000. Order books for the Mégane R.S. open in Spring next year.
