Research reveals increased risk of crashing when speeding

Recently published research has analysed the increased UK drivers put themselves in when they speed during just 10 or 20 per cent of the time they are behind the wheel.

A recent study has found that drivers who speed during just 10 per cent of their driving increase their chances of crashing by over 42 per cent.

A telematics-based car insurance firm, Insure The Box, analysed data acquire over the 620 million miles its customers travelled during 2015 and the associated claims. They aimed to determine if there was a correlation between how regularly drivers exceed the speed limit and how many accidents they have.

Based on the finding from this analysis, it was found that drivers who speed 20 per cent of the time during driving are 87 per cent more likely to crash than drivers who stay within speed limits all the time.

Despite the vastly increased likelihood of crashing, the RAC has ran its own survey which saw 44 per cent of motorists claim that they frequently or occasionally break urban 30mph speed limits. As many as 70 per cent in the same survey also admitted to breaking the motorway speed limit of 70mph.

These findings follow another recent survey which found that drivers in Britain are overall ten per cent more likely to crash in November than in October, largely because drivers are adjusting to the clocks going back one hour.
