Skoda enhances factory efficiency with drone technology

The use of the technology will allow the Czech brand to get a better idea of stock levels and improve the way factories are run.

Skoda is looking to improve the efficiency of its factories and supply sites by using drone technology.

Along with Czech drone specialists, Robodrone, Skoda will be using the flying drones and LIDAR sensors to assess whether containers are empty and if new parts need to be shipped.

The sensors make a 3D map of the site by taking up to 300,000 images per second and the drone can fly around the site at up to 20km/h.

If new equipment and parts are required, the drone will alert the logistics centre at the Mladá Boleslav factory to then send for a restocking.

Skoda has been testing this system since May and in that time has integrated into how the brand operates at its main manufacturing site in the Czech Republic.

The brand aims to make the drones completely autonomous during the next development phase, and if that succeeds the 5kg flying robots will get their own charging ‘nests’ which they would navigate to and then continue with their job after replenishing their batteries.
