Skoda introduces new mild-hybrid powertrain to Octavia range

The new 1.0-litre e-Tec powertrain is now the most affordable electrified Octavia available

Skoda has introduced a new mild-hybrid powertrain onto its popular Octavia hatchback and estate.

Known as e-Tec, the model features a 48-volt battery and belt-driven starter-generator that allows the car to be able to coast for an extended period of time, with a small electric motor ensuring the car’s core functions can still be operated even when the engine isn’t running. Energy is also recovered when braking and stored in the battery – providing extra boost and also helping to lower running costs.

Introduced onto Skoda’s existing 108bhp 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine, which comes with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox in e-Tec guise, it’s the first time Skoda has used a mild-hybrid powertrain on one of its cars. The electrified technology is also set to be introduced onto the more powerful 148bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine in the near future.

This new powertrain will be available on two trims – SE First Edition and SE Technology.

Prices start from £23,005 for the SE Technology, with the more fleet-focussed SE Technology available for slightly more at £23,255. Estate versions command around another £1,000 on top of that, compared to the hatchback.

The new Octavia e-Tec will be available to order from September 22, and will be followed by additional hybrid versions – including a pair of plug-in hybrids, one of which will be a sporty vRS model.
