Tesla surprises everyone with new Roadster

The model was released unexpectedly and comes with a quoted 0-60mph time of 1.9 seconds.

American electric car manufacturer Tesla has unveiled a new model that has shocked the motoring world.

Called the Roadster, it is quoted as being “the quickest car in the world” thanks to its supposed 0-60mph time of 1.9 seconds – which is currently unheard of.

Also coming with a quoted top speed of upwards of 250mph, the Roadster is pushing the boundaries of all-electric mobility, it even has a quoted range of 621 miles despite the performance.

Although the top speed isn’t a first for all cars, it is a first for electric vehicles and with all-wheel drive and a staggering 10,000 Nm of torque produced by the electric powertrain, the Roadster truly boggles the mind.

This isn’t the first Tesla to come with the Roadster moniker – as back in 2008, the Roadster was the brand’s first model that was based on a Lotus Elise chassis.

Not only does it offer all this performance, it can carry four people in comfort and also has a roof that comes off above the front seats to keep in with the roadster.

If a $250 million target is fundraised, 1,000 Founder Editions will be built and if people want to buy one they would need to put down a deposit of $50,000, followed by the remaining $200,000 cost – which is roughly £188,000.

At an event last night that also saw the launch of Tesla’s first all-electric lorry, CEO Elon Musk said: “People have asked us for a long time, ‘when are you going to make a new Roadster?’ We are making it now.

“The Tesla Roadster will be the fastest production car ever made.”

Production of the new Roadster is expected to begin in 2020 and will join the Model S, Model X and Model 3.
