Replacing the Rapid, Skoda’s new Scala is the latest addition to the Czech brand’s line-up and brings a new design outlook for the firm first displayed on the Vision RS concept from 2018.
But why should customers be looking into this new Skoda and what features should you be looking out for? We take a look at the Scala’s highlights…
Excellent engine options
With three petrol units and a single diesel to choose from, customers will have more than enough power options to look at before deciding which one is for them. Two of the petrols are based on the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI block that is offered in 94bhp and 113bhp guises, while the top-spec petrol and most powerful unit in the range is a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI developing 148bhp. For the sole 1.6-litre diesel, drivers will have access to 113bhp and 350Nm of torque. Only the base option isn’t available with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with manual transmissions offered as standard.
Top-end safety equipment
Skoda has ensured the Scala is superbly appointed for a car starting under £20,000 and it features kit such as lane assist and front assist with city emergency braking and predictive pedestrian protection as standard. But further options include adaptive cruise control, driver fatigue detection, side assist, rear-view camera and park assist – all of which help the driver through all different aspects of driving.

The Scala leads the way in terms of cabin and storage space for its segment, and based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, that’s no surprise. The 467-litre boot is class-leading, while the extended rear head, elbow and legroom over the Rapid is also well ahead of its closest competitors. Folding the rear seats down allows for 1,410 litres of storage space, which is excellent for a car of this size.
Quality infotainment as standard
Scala models are available with central screens up to 9.2-inch – with even entry-level screen options coming in at 6.5-inch. But the kit doesn’t stop there, as the Scala can be fitted with a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, an eight-speaker sound system and wireless smartphone charging. The Skoda Connect service also offers customers with a series of applications to use in conjunction with their phone.
Simply Clever features
As with other Skodas, the Scala comes with ‘Simply Clever’ solutions, such as an ice scraper in the fuel filler cap, waste bin in the door, folding tray tables, an umbrella in the driver’s door, an electric tailgate, nets and hooks in the boot and an electrically-folding tow bar.
