The BMW 8 Series will return in 2018, here’s your first look at the concept

The BMW 8 Series will return in 2018 as a sleek and luxurious two-door saloon that will sit above the 7 Series as the German manufacturer's new flagship model.

BMW will resurrect the 8 Series nameplate for its new flagship model, with a concept version unveiled later this month before the car officially goes on sale next year.

The new 8 Series will be a sleek and luxurious two-door sport coupe and will both sit above and share many components with BMW’s current range-topping model, the 7 Series.

A teaser image unveiled by the German manufacturer shows the silhouette of the new car, with a long, sleek profile and the same flat-bottomed headlight tubes that feature on many new BMWs.

Serving as the manufacturer’s ultimate expression of its engineering, performance and connectivity prowess, the 8 Series will rival cars like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Bentley Continental GT.

Aside from that little is known about the new car, though it’s extremely likely that it will share many technologies first pioneered on the 7 Series and will possibly come in a hybrid variant.

The 8 Series nameplate was first used for a futuristic two-door coupe BMW manufactured between 1989 and 1999, and rumours of the name’s return have been doing the rounds for nearly a decade.
