The Grand Tour is officially the most illegally-downloaded show in history

The Grand Tour is officially the most illegally-downloaded programme in broadcast history, beating long-running series like Game of Thrones in terms of volume.

Jeremy Clarkson’s new Amazon Prime show, The Grand Tour, is officially the most illegally-downloaded show in history according to a new report.

Data analysts Muso claim that the first episode of The Grand Tour was pirated a record 7.9 million times, while the second was downloaded illegally 6.4 million times.

Both the third and fourth episodes likewise were downloaded by millions of viewers, meaning the show even beats the likes of longer-running series like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

Officially, The Grand Tour is aired exclusively on Amazon Prime, which costs viewers £79 a year - or £5.99 per month for the video service only – to access.

Muso estimates that Amazon will have lost a potential £3.2 million in the UK alone for the first episode, while the series itself has cost a reported $250 million to make.

Chris Elkins, chief commercial officer for Muso, said: “It is the most illegally downloaded programme ever. It is off the scale in terms of volume.

“It has overtaken every big show, including Game of Thrones, for the totals across different platforms. We monitor thousands of campaigns and this one really stands out.”

It doesn’t seem to be all bad news for Amazon, however, as a spokesperson for the series claimed that it’s brought record numbers of viewers onto the Prime platform.

The spokesperson added: “The Grand Tour has become the biggest show premiere ever on Amazon Prime Video, breaking records around the world.”
