The Mitsubishi Eclipse is coming back, but not quite how you’d expect

Remember the iconic Mitsubishi Eclipse? Well, it’s coming back. Except this time round, the Eclipse badge will adorn Mitsubishi’s latest family SUV.

Mitsubishi first unveiled its plans for a Qashqai rival earlier this month, and although it’s unclear exactly what the car’s name will be, it’s rumoured to be named Eclipse, per an Auto Express report.

Based on the XR concept that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2015, the car will feature a rakish, coupe-like design that’s a long way from Mitsubishi’s boxier SUVs like the Outlander.

Not much is known about the car yet, but it’s based on a shortened version of the Outlander’s platform and will be available with either a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, or a 2.2-litre diesel.

An all-wheel drive system derived from that used on the Lancer Evo will be an option, as well a CVT automatic gearbox with seven selectable ratios.

The new SUV will be an important model for Mitsubishi, as it strives to rebuild its brand and its fortunes under the stewardship of the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Many fans will be surprised at the controversial use of the Eclipse name, however. Although it makes sense to use a name familiar to consumers, christening the SUV with the badge of an iconic sports car might seem to some a poor choice.

Here’s just hoping that the Evo doesn’t come back as a crossover. Though judging by previous statements from Mitsubishi, it seems even that isn’t sacred
