Volkswagen Amarok receives facelift and V6

The Volkswagen Amarok pick-up is getting refreshed to keep up with its rivals. New styling touches and a big V6 diesel are among the changes.

The Volkswagen Amarok pick-up has been updated for 2016 with a design refresh and a new 3.0-litre V6 diesel.

A rival to the likes of the Mitsubishi L200 and Ford Ranger, the updated Volkswagen Amarok will go on sale towards the end of this year and pricing is likely to start from around £21,000.

Fresh look and bigger engine

The facelifted Amarok receives a revised front bumper, redesigned alloy wheels, a new front grille with extra chrome trim and new ‘4MOTION’ decals when choosing a four-wheel drive model. Inside, the refreshed Amarok has new dashboard features and redesigned seats with a more ergonomic shape.

Regarding engines, the updated Amarok ditches the 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI diesels previously used in favour of a new 3.0-litre V6 unit available with three power outputs.

It can produce either 161bhp, 201bhp or 221bhp and in its most powerful guise, the new V6 also delivers 550Nm of torque. That’s 130Nm more than what the previous 2.0-litre diesel was able to offer. The new V6 for the Amarok is not only more powerful but also improves the pick-up’s towing capacity to up to 3.5 tonnes.

The new Amarok can utilise either permanent rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive with selectable four-wheel drive or permanent 4MOTION four-wheel drive. While most models in the range will use a manual gearbox as standard, the revised Amarok exclusively uses an eight-speed automatic ‘box when utilising 4MOTION.

Even with the extra power, the Amarok can still emit just under 200g/km in CO2 and the official average fuel economy recorded is 37mpg (when using the automatic gearbox).

Standard equipment for the VW Amarok in the Aventura trim includes 20-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera and post-collision braking.
