Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S hot hatch sold out in UK

All examples of the 306bhp Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S offered to UK customers have been sold.

Every single model of the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S allocated to the UK market has already been sold. This has been confirmed by VW as the German manufacturer undergoes preparations for delivering the new hot hatch. It is set to begin arriving to buyers in early October.

Priced at £33,995, the GTI Clubsport S is one of the hottest hot hatches ever, and is based on the latest Golf. It boasts 306bhp from its front-wheel drive powertrain that includes a 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine and manual gearbox.

Only 400 examples of the Golf GTI Clubsport S will be built for customers and while a large portion of those (150) are coming to the UK, each example has already been sold. Although anyone outside those lucky 150 customers may have missed out now, VW may be persuaded to make more in the future if there’s sufficient demand.

Nurburgring record-holder

Volkswagen’s latest hot hatch hit the headlines back in May when it set the fastest time for a front-wheel drive car around the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife race circuit. Lapping the track in a time of 7 minutes and 49.21 seconds, the Clubsport S beat the previous record held by the Honda Civic Type R by 1.4 seconds.

Not surprisingly, the Clubsport S sacrifices some of the Golf’s famous practicality to enhance its outright performance. As well as boasting a more powerful engine than other Golf hot hatches, the Clubsport S removes the rear seats, saving 30kg, and other changes bring the car’s total weight down to 1,285kg. That’s almost the same weight as the VW Polo GTI.

The Clubsport S also features redesigned front bumpers, a rear diffuser and a large roof spoiler to significantly boost the aerodynamics and downforce of the Golf. The result of all this work is a zero to 62mph sprint time of just 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 165mph. The Golf R boasts a quicker benchmark sprint time of 4.9 seconds, but this largely down to its four-wheel drive.
