Volvo has announced the full details of its new XC40 PHEV, which completes the firm’s plug-in hybrid jigsaw.
Volvo was a brand that quick to commit to electrification, and has offered PHEVs for many years. With the launch of the new T5 ‘Twin Engine’ it means the brand now has a plug-in hybrid version of every model in its range.
The XC40 uses a smaller hybrid powertrain than the rest of the Volvo range – combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 258bhp. This makes it the most powerful XC40 offering.
A 10.7kWh lithium-ion battery enables the XC40 to travel just under 30 miles on electric power, along with impressively low claimed running costs – Volvo claiming it can manage 141.1mpg on the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 38g/km.
Low CO2 emissions will likely make this XC40 hybrid a popular choice with company car drivers, with the benefit-in-kind being much lower than the normal petrol and diesel models.

Order books for the XC40 T5 are now open, with first deliveries expected in February 2020.
