Volvo adds T3 petrol engine to XC40

The unit comes in at the bottom of the engine line-up, meaning prices now start from £27,610.

Volvo has increased the options available to potential XC40 customers by adding the T3 three-cylinder petrol engine to the line-up.

This is the Swedish brand’s first three-cylinder engine and the 1.5-litre unit produces 154bhp and 265Nm of torque.

Initially Volvo will only be offering the T3 engine alongside a six-speed manual transmission, with an eight-speed automatic option to be added later.

With the manual gearbox and entry-level petrol fitted, the XC40 can get from 0-60mph in 9.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 124mph. The T3 will also be able achieve 45.6mpg and emit 144g/km CO2.

John Wakefield, Volvo Car UK managing director, said: "The XC40 is the ideal recipient of the new T3 engine, a unit that demonstrates Volvo's commitment to innovative engineering and technology that prioritises compact packaging without compromising performance and efficiency.

“Together with the other powertrain additions to the line-up, it gives us a comprehensive model range that will help the XC40 achieve its full market potential."

The standard XC40 Momentum model now includes the Sensus nine-inch portrait touchscreen, satellite navigation, automatic LED headlights with active high beam, 18-inch alloy wheels and dual-zone climate control.

Prices for the refreshed XC40 range now start from £27,610 for the T3 Momentum model – with customers able to choose from 38 different trim and powertrain combinations.
