The Honda S2000 could be making a return soon

The iconic Honda S2000 roadster could be on the cusp of returning for Honda’s 70th anniversary in two years’ time, according to reports.

Rumours of the S2000’s rebirth have been swirling around for a while now, but Car and Driver claims that Honda is allegedly planning something special for its anniversary celebrations.

Given that the original S2000 was launched in 1998 in honour of the manufacturer’s 50th anniversary it makes sense that something similar could happen for its next major milestone in 2018.

Deft handling, strong powertrain

A third-generation S2000 roadster would also be perfectly placed to tackle two-seater rivals like the new fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 and Fiat’s upcoming 124 Spider.

Although at present Honda doesn’t have a platform for a small, rear-wheel drive sports car, the report states that it’s likely it’ll share its own unique underpinnings like the new NSX supercar.

The original Honda S2000 quickly gained a reputation for its deft handling and strong powertrain, and it’s believed the much-rumoured successor will build on the same strengths as the original.

Same engine as Civic Type R

Expected to weigh around a tonne or less, it’s also rumoured that a new third-generation S2000 would use the same 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC engine that powers the current Civic Type R.

Of course, at this stage the rumoured new Honda S2000 is still only just speculation, but given that 2018 isn’t that far into the future it’s possible more could be known soon.
