Updated Kia Cee’d debuts smaller, more efficient engines

The updated Kia Cee’d goes on sale later this month and will be the first model range to use the South Korean manufacturer’s advanced new engines. These include a 1.0-litre turbo petrol unit called ecoTurbo and a 1.6-litre turbodiesel.

First deliveries of the updated Kia Cee’d range, which has received a subtle facelift, will arrive in Britain on October 1.

The new engines for the Kia Cee’d are available for all body styles, including the five-door hatchback, the three-door Pro_cee’d hatchback and the Cee’d Sportswagon estate.

The ecoTurbo petrol engine is a 1.0-litre T-GDi, three-cylinder unit which will play a key part in Kia’s plan to downsize 70 per cent of their engines in the next few years.

There are two versions of the ecoTurbo for the Cee’d line-up. It can produce 98bhp or 118bhp for the Cee’d and Pro_cee’d hatchbacks, or 118bhp only for the Cee’d Sportswagon. For all body styles this engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and stop-start engine technology is also standard.

The ecoTurbo has been engineered to require 10 to 15 per cent less fuel than the 1.4 or 1.6-litre petrol engines previously used for the Cee’d range, with similar reductions in emissions. In its most efficient guise (the five-door hatch), the ecoTurbo-driven Cee’d improves fuel economy to 56.7mpg and CO2 emissions are as low as 113g/km.

The 98bhp ecoTurbo accelerates the Cee’d and Pro_cee’d from zero to 60mph in just under 12.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 114mph. The 118bhp unit reduces the 0-60mph time by two seconds. The Cee’d Sportswagon with the ecoTurbo covers the same sprint in 11 seconds and reaches up to 116mph.

Also available for all body styles in the refreshed Cee’d range is the updated 1.6-litre CRDi turbodiesel. Power is increased from 126bhp to 134bhp and the engine can be mated with a standard six-speed manual gearbox or new seven-speed DCT automatic ‘box.

CO2 emissions are down by as much as 10g/km in manual versions, and are now start at just 94g/km. In any body style, the Cee’d with the updated turbodiesel officially averages above 72mpg for fuel economy and up to 78.5mpg for the five-door hatch.

The 0-60mph acceleration times and top speeds for the new diesel-driven Cee’d and Pro_cee’d are 9.5 seconds and 114mph with the manual gearbox, and 9.8 seconds and 122mph with the automatic.

Pricing for the ecoTurbo Cee’d starts at £17,445 for the three-door model, while the most affordable turbodiesel version costs £18,395.
