Audi’s new SQ5 performance SUV could come with a ‘Drift Mode’

Audi has hinted that its upcoming SQ5 performance SUV could potentially come with some form of drift mode.

The SQ5, which is due out next year, will serve as a sportier version of the new Q5 SUV, but according to Audi engineers they’re going to lengths to really eke out as much sportiness as possible.

Speaking to Autocar, one engineer described the potential for the SQ5 to induce oversteer, and testing is due to begin soon in snowy Sweden to assess the playfulness of the prototype car.

It’s unknown exactly how the car will achieve that, but according to Autocar it could potentially come from a new trick differential to better exploit the car’s Quattro all-wheel drive system.

SQ5 due out next year

Engine options are expected to be a range of both petrol and diesel V6s, with power boosted considerably courtesy of an ECU tune and a larger turbocharger.

The latest version of the regular Q5 was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year, which features new looks inspired by the Q2 and Q7, plus new engines and equipment.

As well as the SQ5, it’s expected that a hybrid version of the Q5 will join the range at some stage next year, along with a range-topping RS Q5 variant.
