Audi to introduce anti-allergy air filter to new cars

Audi has announced that several of its models will receive a new and improved air conditioning filter that not only removes fine particulates and harmful gases from the air, but also neutralises virtually all allergens.

This anti-allergy air filter will be introduced to the Audi A1, A3, Q3 and TT from this June. It will also be inserted in the all-new Audi Q2 when that launches later on this year.

Motorists that already own one of the cars set to receive the air filter will be able to get it retrofitted as part of their regularly scheduled service intervals.

Healthier cabin

Designed to tackle potential health risks posed by air pollution, Audi’s new air conditioning filter comes in two versions, both of which comprise three layers.

While most car air con filters come with a two-layer filter for creating high air quality, Audi’s new feature is special since its outer carrier layer features an additional anti-allergen effect.

One variant of the filter reduces allergens by means of plant-derived, bioactive substances called polyphenols, which attach themselves to the receptors of the allergens. The other variant uses a modification of the protein structure to achieve the desired effect.

Another manufacturer introducing a more sophisticated air filter for its air conditioning is Tesla.

The upcoming Tesla Model X uses what’s called an HEPA air filtration system, which Tesla says is 100 times more effective than a regular cabin filter. This new filter will also be introduced to the facelifted Model S launching later this year.
