Fastest production car ever? Lamborghini teases new Huracan Performante Nürburgring record

The new Lamborghini Huracan Performante will debut this Thursday at the Geneva Motor Show, and Lambo is already teasing what’s believed to be a new Nürburgring record set by the car.

Despite being based on Lamborghini’s current entry-level model, the Huracan coupe, the Performante promises to be potentially the fastest Lambo yet.

Specifically, it’s gunning for the 6 minutes 57 second lap record set by the 875bhp Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar, which currently sits as the fastest production car around the ‘Ring.

That might seem like a tall order for the baby Huracan, but the 918’s record was set back in 2013, and four years is a long time in the supercar world.

Lamborghini also promises that the Performante will be unlike anything ever seen before from the Italian manufacturer, with the marque’s R&D head Maurizio Reggiani calling it “big news”.

It’s believed the car will debut a unique new active aerodynamics system, called the Aerodynamica Lamborghini Attiva, which can apply downforce to either side of the car as needed.

Using two flaps on either side of the rear wing that can open and close individually like those found on the tail of a fighter jet, it can maximise cornering speeds while simultaneously minimising drag.

It’ll also likely be much lighter than the regular Huracan, while a significant amount more power will be wrung out from its 5.2-litre V10 engine.

You’ll have to wait until Thursday to see the new Lamborghini Huracan Performante, and so you can expect more news on its potential Nürburgring victory around the same time.
