New Huracan Performante promises to be Lambo’s fastest ‘Ring smasher yet

From the Sesto Elemento to the Aventador Superveloce, Lamborghini has a long history of producing lightened, track-focused versions of its supercars. Now, it’s about to unveil its fastest one yet.

Named the Huracan Performante, it’s based on Lamborghini’s current entry-level model, the 600bhp V10-powered Huracan coupe and has been spotted testing around Germany’s famous Nurburgring.

But even though the Huracan is seen as the baby of the family, the Performante version won’t only be faster than an Aventador SV: Lambo says it’s gunning for the all-time Nurburgring record.

Currently, that title is held by the 875bhp Porsche 918 Spyder, a hybrid hypercar that’s set the fastest production car lap around the ‘Ring on record at just 6.57.73.

Exact times and performance figures have yet to be released, but according to Lamborghini’s research and development head Maurizio Reggiani, it’s going to be “big news”.

Unique new active aerodynamics system

Much of the Huracan Performante’s speed is likely thanks to a unqiue new active aerodynamic system to optimise downforce and airflow, the exact details of which are still a closely guarded secret.

According to reports, that system is called the Aerodynamica Lamborghini Attiva, which features two flaps on either side of the rear wing that can open and close individually like those found on fighter jets.

As a result, the car can apply more or less downforce to either side as needed, meaning that it can maximise cornering speeds while simultaneously minimising all possible drag.

The Huracan Performante is also likely to be much lighter in weight than the standard Huracan, and will likely come with a significant amount of extra power wrung out from its V10 engine.

Lamborghini is set to officially unveil the car in full at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show this March, so expect to find out much more in the coming weeks.
