Is Adrian Newey making an Aston Martin?

Reports have emerged that the legendary Formula 1 designer and Red Bull Racing chief technical officer, Adrian Newey, is working with Aston Martin to create a new hypercar.

Newey is one of the most famous non-driver names in Formula One, having led the design of numerous championship winning cars. He has worked at the Red Bull Racing team since 2007 and designed the cars that aided Sebastian Vettel to four drivers’ titles between 2010 and 2013.

Last weekend, there were rumours that Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing were in talks to form a possible partnership in Formula 1. It has since emerged that Aston Martin has discussed similar plans with other teams in the motor sport.

However, it is now being reported that Aston Martin and Red Bull have also had discussions about a road car deal. The partnership is believed to involve specifically the company Red Bull Technologies, which Newey works at and is technically considered separate from the Red Bull Formula 1 team.

Very few details about the new car have emerged. However, it’s believed that Newey and Aston Martin are aiming to create a spectacular new hypercar which could rival the likes of the McLaren P1 GTR and the LaFerrari FXX K. Those are both track-only cars, which could mean the Newey-designed Aston Martin won’t be road legal either.

Rumours also suggest that Newey’s Aston Martin could use a Mercedes engine, which is possible since Mercedes and Aston Martin have an existing technical partnership. The parent company of Mercedes, Daimler AG, owns a five per cent share of Aston Martin.

Aston Martin recently revealed a track-only car to the British public last month, called the Vulcan, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. While the Newey-designed project could share some components, it’s believed Aston Martin and Newey are keen to make their hypercar as distinct from the Vulcan as possible.
