MINI unveils new soft-top John Cooper Works Convertible

MINI's hottest offering, the John Cooper Works, has just got the option of a Convertible model for the first time, mixing potency with the open-top experience.

The MINI John Cooper Works, currently the hottest offering in the marque’s range, is now available as a convertible for the first time.

Mixing race-bred potency with an open-air driving experience, the John Cooper Works Convertible is available to order now, priced from £26,630, and with first deliveries due from this April onwards.

Despite the fabric top, the Convertible model hasn’t gone soft in terms of performance, with the same 228bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine as the regular John Cooper Works Hatch model.

Same power, same performance

That means an additional 39 horsepower over the standard Cooper S, and the JCW Convertible is able to zip from 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds with top speed clocking in at a maximum of 150mph.

In order to harness all that power, the Convertible model comes with the same race-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes and extensive exterior air ducts as the hard-top John Cooper Works.

However, MINI’s engineers have specifically altered the car’s setup to compensate for its lack of a hard roof, with custom suspension settings and bespoke aerodynamic additions.

Available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or the optional six-speed Steptronic automatic, the JCW Convertible can also return up to 47.9mpg with as little as 138g/km of CO2 emitted.

Inside, the drop-top John Cooper Works gets unique sports seats with optional leather upholstery, plus a leather multi-function steering wheel and the option of a heads-up display.

Range of optional extras

The cabin also features the MINI Connected App infotainment system with Bluetooth and options which include rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, automatic forward braking and a Kardon hi-fi.

Finally, the John Cooper Works Convertible wouldn’t be complete without its fully automatic textile roof, which includes a heated rear window and a high-quality liner to keep the elements out.

Able to be opened and closed in just 18 seconds, the roof can fold and extend at speeds of up to 19mph, while it can also be had with an optional Union Jack graphic design as an optional extra.
