Peugeot 308 GTi hot hatch unveiled

Peugeot has revealed images and details of the 308 GTi, the hottest version yet of its latest five-door hatchback. It will challenge the likes of the Ford Focus ST and SEAT Leon Cupra, and it’s expected to launch this September.

The new GTi model sits above all existing specifications in the Peugeot 308 hatchback range, including the GT version launched earlier this year.

Under the bonnet of the GTi is a 1.6-litre THP petrol engine, which is also used for Peugeots’s RCZ R. In the 308, this engine has been tweaked to be more efficient but can still deliver either 247bhp or 268bhp. Power is sent to the front wheels and the gearbox is a six-speed manual. Start-stop engine technology is standard as well.

The 0-62mph sprint time for the 247bhp 308 GTi is 6.2 seconds, reduced to six seconds exactly for the 268bhp model. With either output, the top speed is 155mph. The 247bhp GTi is the more efficient, with a combined fuel economy of 47.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g/km.

Compared to the GT, which can deliver 178bhp or 202bhp, the GTi version is not only different in terms of power. It also has a lower ride height by 11mm, recalibrated dampers and wider tracks at the front and rear. These changes should boost the GTi’s grip levels and reduce body roll.

Standard features for the GTi includes 19-inch alloy wheels and full LED headlamps. A two-tone black and red paint job can be optionally applied to the 268bhp model for £1,300.

Pricing for the Peugeot 308 GTi is set at £26,555 for the 247bhp version or £28,155 for the 268bhp version.

The new Peugeot 308 GTi will make its first public appearance later this month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Look out for more details on this car and others during our coverage at Goodwood next week.
