Tesla confirms more powerful 100D battery

Tesla has confirmed that it will manufacturer a more powerful 100-kilowatt-hour battery to be used in both its Model S and Model X range.

Tesla has confirmed that it is in the process of manufacturing a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack for both its Model S and Model X, which will sit above the current flagship P90D derivative.

The P100D has been teased on multiple occasions by the electric car maker, but it was officially confirmed yesterday afternoon. Upon release, the P100D will boast the highest range and power figures ever offered in a Tesla.

The Model S P100D, with its famed Ludicrous mode enabled, will carry a range of 315 miles and a zero to 60mph sprint time of just 2.5 seconds. The Model X with Ludicrous mode enabled on the other hand can travel up to 289 miles and reach 60mph in 2.9 seconds.

With these performance figures, the Model S P100D is officially the fastest accelerating production car on sale – and the third fastest accelerating production car of all time. However, unlike niche, limited-run performance cars like the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder, the Model S P100D will be a much more mainstream, mass-produced model. Upon launch, the Model X P100D will be the fastest accelerating SUV of all time.

Tesla has said that those who are currently awaiting delivery of their Model S or Model X P90D will be given the chance to upgrade their models to P100D for $10,000 (£7,560). Furthermore, those who already own a P90D model can have the battery replaced with a P100D for $20,000 (£15,120).
