Tesla issues recall for every Model S over seatbelt fears

Tesla is issuing a recall for every Model S it has sold to date, after a fault with the passenger side seatbelt was discovered.

In a statement emailed to owners and posted on its website, the company said: “Tesla recently found a Model S in Europe with a front seatbelt that was not properly connected to the outboard lap pretensioner.

“This vehicle was not involved in a crash and there were no injuries. However, in the event of a crash, a seatbelt in this condition would not provide full protection.”

The front seatbelts in the Model S are both anchored to the outboard lap pretensioner via two anchor plates, though the car in question wasn’t properly assembled.

As a result, all Model S owners are being asked to book their car into their nearest Tesla service centre for an inspection, though so far there has only been the one confirmed instance of the fault.

Having been on sale since 2012, there are currently around 90,000 Model S cars currently on the roads, making this one of the largest recalls for Tesla, though it has issued them in the past.

Most recently, it issued a recall in January 2014 when it updated the software in some of its cars to prevent its electric charging components from overheating when plugged in.

Currently, it’s only the Model S which has been affected, and Tesla claims that its new Model X SUV has a different front seatbelt design and, as a result, won’t be affected by the recall.
