The top ten cars... of everything

There’s not much car fans love more than arguing over about which cars are the best, whether it’s based on power, performance or everyday practicality.

As a result, lists are pretty popular on the internet, whether it’s the top Pininfarina designs or the best new models from this year’s auto shows, but it’s unlikely you’ll have ever seen a list like this before.

Specialist insurer Adrian Flux put together a unique top ten of the top ten, so from the best video game vehicle to the most possessed car, here’s the top ten cars… of everything.

1. The most retro-futuristic car

Looking halfway between a car and an old plane, it looks as though this 1948 TASCO is just two wings away from taking off.

Created by famed automotive designer Gordon Buehrig, the man responsible for post-war beauties like the Continental Mark II, the TASCO never made full production but did inspire a contract with the Beech Aircraft Company.

Interestingly, the TASCO was also the first car in the world to come with a T-top roof, a feature which Buehrig created and which has appeared on cars from the Suzuki X-90 to the Chevrolet Corvette.

2. The fastest-accelerating electric car

Officially, GreenTeam’s E0711-5 racer is the fastest-accelerating electric car on the planet, capable of covering the 0-62mph sprint in an absolutely phenomenal 1.7 seconds.

Developed by students from the University of Stuttgart, this battery-powered beast beat the previous record by 0.006 seconds and is actually faster than a Formula One car!

3. The best video game car

There are plenty of amazing cars from the video game world, but easily the best and probably most iconic is the Mario Kart!

Millions of people across the world have spent hours battling their friends, racing against the clock in Time Trial mode or chucking bananas and shells in a Battle Mode free-for-all.

It’s hard to think of any other game which has spawned so much light-hearted fun, and it’s even crossed over with the real world after Mercedes-Benz designed downloadable GLA, 300 SL Roadster and Silver Arrow models to play with!

4. The best-selling car

In the UK, the Ford Fiesta is officially the best-selling car of all time, with more than 4,200,000 of the things sold so far.

The previous record was set by the Ford Escort before the Fiesta knocked it off the top spot back in 2014, and it’s easy to see why thanks to its broad appeal, great value and wide range of different models.

5. The fastest supersonic car

Currently, the World Land Speed Record is held by the Thrust Supersonic Car, which achieved an absolutely blistering speed of 763mph on 15th October 1997.

The first car in history to officially break the sound barrier, the Thrust’s days at the top might be numbered as its successor, the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, is aiming to smash its record later this year.

Piloted by RAF Wing Commander Andy Green, the same man who drove the Thrust, the Bloodhound is predicted to reach speeds of more than 1,000mph during its record attempt. Blimey!

6. The hottest hot rod

There are plenty of amazing custom hot rods, but the 1932 Ford Model T is probably the hottest of them all, particularly when kitted out with a full flame paintjob.

After the Second World War, American GIs returning home bought the Model T up in droves, putting their technical training to use and souping their cars up to race on the dry lake beds of southern California.

7. The most expensive car sold at auction

Back in 2014, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta set the record for the most expensive car sold at auction, having gone under the hammer for a whopping £22,843,633.

Only 39 of these cars were built by Ferrari, so it’s no wonder they’re so highly sought after, and they’re likely to only get more expensive as time goes by.

8. The most heroic car

What else could take the top spot for the most heroic car apart from the iconic Batmobile, one of the best-loved and most widely recognised vehicles of all time?

Compared with other heroes like James Bond, who uses modified production cars, Batman exclusively drives custom-built cars kitted out with all sorts of gadgetry like smoke bombs and an afterburner.

After all, what else would millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne spend his money on when he’s not busy stalking the streets of Gotham city and punching bad guys in the face?

9. The car most in tune with your mood

Toyota’s amazing FV2 concept car uses unique image and voice recognition technology that can detect its driver’s mood and change its exterior to suit and reflect this.

There’s no steering wheel either, with drivers steering the car by shifting their bodyweight backwards, forwards, left and right. Wouldn’t need to drive one of those if you’re feeling dizzy!

10. The most possessed car

Last not least is Christine, a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury that was used in the film adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel of the same name.

Possessed by demonic forces of an unknown origin, Christine pursues and kills the people who torment her owner, the dorky Arnie Cunningham.

You can’t help but wonder what owning a car inhabited by vengeful spirits would do to your insurance quote…?
