What Is It?
The Toyota GR GT is Toyota’s next generation flagship performance car, a V8 hybrid supercar developed by Gazoo Racing. It’s being hailed as the spiritual successor to the Lexus LFA and the classic Toyota 2000GT, blending cutting edge hybrid technology with true motorsport DNA.
Built with FIA GT3 racing regulations in mind, the GR GT isn’t just a high powered road car, it’s a race bred machine designed to bring track performance to everyday driving. Expect around 700bhp, aggressive styling, and Toyota’s most advanced engineering yet.
Official Reveal Date Confirmed
Right, mark your calendars. Toyota’s showing off the new GR GT in a livestream event on 4 December. That’s when we’ll properly get to see what it’s all about. Then, a month later, it gets a public outing at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2026.
This car’s also carrying quite a legacy. It’s meant to follow in the footsteps of the Lexus LFA and the classic Toyota 2000GT. Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s chairman, dropped the reveal date during a livestream, which also featured a cheeky audio tease of the V8 hybrid in action. He called it Toyota’s new flagship and halo model, so no pressure then.
Powertrain and Platform Preview
We don’t know all the numbers just yet, but what Toyota’s shared so far tells us a fair bit. It’s definitely getting a V8, and it looks like there’s a twin turbo hybrid setup coming with it. We're talking in the region of 700bhp, which puts it toe to toe with big names like Ferrari, Porsche, and Aston Martin.
The platform’s being built with FIA GT3 racing rules in mind. That tells us this isn’t just a flashy road car, it’s got serious racing bones. We can expect it to be packed with lightweight materials, clever aerodynamic tweaks, and all the motorsport know how Gazoo Racing can throw at it.
Branding: Toyota or Lexus?
There’s been a bit of back and forth about whether this would come out under the Toyota badge or end up wearing a Lexus logo. While some thought it might be that Lexus LFR we’ve heard whispers about, Toyota’s now said it loud and clear, it’ll be wearing the GR GT badge.
That said, don’t rule out some markets getting a Lexus branded version down the line. The UK and Japan, though, are looking at a full Gazoo Racing branded Toyota.
Akio Toyoda's been hands on with this one, apparently even helping name the thing. He dropped the line “The soul lives on” when talking about it, clearly keen to make it clear this isn’t just a slightly faster road car. This is a proper track beast that just happens to have a number plate.
What’s Next?
December 4’s coming up fast, and Toyota’s clearly got a big rollout planned. We’ll be getting the full spec sheet, performance figures, and likely a few more sneak peeks inside the cabin and out on the track.
Once we hit January 2026, the GR GT will be fully on display at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Until then, we’ll have to make do with that V8 hybrid soundtrack Akio Toyoda previewed and those Fuji Speedway sightings.
If you’re into Toyota performance, this isn’t just a new model, it’s the latest chapter in a proper legacy. The wait’s nearly over.
