The Heart of the Matter: Powertrain Evolution
The 2025 E53 still uses the 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six but now pairs it with Mercedes-AMG's “P3 hybrid” system. The engine alone produces 443bhp, while the rear-mounted electric motor adds another 161bhp. Total combined output? A hefty 577bhp and 750Nm of torque.
Official electric-only range is up to 62 miles, though expect closer to 40 miles in real-world UK driving. That’s still plenty for most commutes.
Performance is impressive: 0–62mph takes just 3.8 seconds.

Driving Dynamics: Electrified, but Engaging?
Is it still a proper AMG? Yes—but it feels different.
Acceleration is instant, thanks to the electric motor. Overtaking feels effortless, and the rear-wheel steering helps make this large, heavy car feel smaller in tight corners.
Adaptive air suspension smooths out rough roads in Comfort mode but firms up nicely in Sport modes. While it lacks the raucous, raw feeling of a V8-powered AMG, it delivers a more polished and refined driving experience.
Design and Interior: Business Jet on Wheels
The E53 strikes a balance between subtle and aggressive styling. It’s less attention-grabbing than an M5 or RS6 but still makes a statement.
Inside, the MBUX Superscreen dominates the dashboard. An optional passenger display adds extra flair. Materials feel premium throughout, with a mix of aluminium, Alcantara, and ambient lighting creating a luxurious environment.
There’s plenty of space for passengers front and rear. Boot space is 370 litres—less than the regular E-Class due to the battery pack but still practical enough for everyday needs.
Real-World Usability
For daily driving, the E53 excels. The electric-only mode makes it quiet and efficient around town. You can easily cover most school runs and short commutes without using petrol.
Charging overnight with a home wallbox keeps it ready for short trips. Fast charging is limited to 60kW, which isn’t groundbreaking but is good enough for quick top-ups.
Fuel economy is decent for a car of this size. Gentle driving can see up to 50–70mpg, though spirited driving will quickly drop that figure.

What's Missing?
At over £85,000 before options, it gets expensive fast. Fully loaded, it’s easily a six-figure car.
Weight is also an issue. At over 2,300kg, it feels heavy when pushed hard on backroads.
And despite synthetic sound enhancements, it just doesn’t sound as exciting as the V8 models of the past.
Verdict: A Quiet Revolution
The E53 isn’t a loud, wild AMG. Instead, it’s a more mature and sophisticated take on performance. For buyers who want everyday usability, lower emissions, and still crave fast, effortless driving, it makes a strong case.
It may not satisfy those chasing the raw thrills of AMGs past, but for most, this is probably all the car they’ll ever need.
