We say

The A4 is a big leap forward for Audi with the latest generation. Quality throughout, and a genuine contender to the BMW 3-Series.

Performance

Much improved from the outgoing model. Staggering range of engines from the frugal 2.0 diesel, flexible TFSI turbo petrols and the powerful 3.2-litre V6. 2.0-litre turbodiesels are probably the best all-rounders.

Emissions

There’s a hair-shirt 120g/km 2.0-litre diesel model at the bottom of the A4 range that returns over 60mpg but despite impressive figures, Audi falls behind BMW’s Efficient Dynamics technology with fuel-saving tech.

Driving

Composed and refined on the roads but with an edge, the Audi A4 is a very good car to drive.

Feel

The A4 saloon is quiet, efficient and comfortable – everything necessary in a premium saloon.

Space

Huge improvements over the previous A4. Plenty of leg and headroom for passengers and a good sized boot at 480 litres.

Equipment

Climate control, leather steering wheel, daytime running lights and a CD player as standard. Cough up or head to a higher trim level if you want more.

Price

Cheaper than its Mercedes and BMW rivals, though expensive with larger engines. Strong residuals. Running costs depend entirely on which model you go for – there are plenty in the Audi A4 saloon range to choose from.

Quality

The Audi A4 is a superbly put together car with premium quality throughout.

Safety

ESP with limited-slip differential, side airbags and first aid kit as standard on the A4 saloon.

Pros

Beautifully built, composed on the UK roads, does everything asked of it easily.

Cons

Can’t compete with more efficient and cleaner rivals on engine tech, not the most exciting executive car in its class.

Alternatives

Mercedes C Class, BMW 3 Series
