We say If you need a cheap MPV the Carens could be worth a look but it's showing its age.Performance One petrol and one diesel 1.6-litre engine ion the Carens MPV. The latter is the better model across the board, offering similar performance, but much more torque and fuel economy.Emissions The diesel 1.6 Carens will return nearly 50mpg combined and emit under 150g/km of CO2.Driving The Carens’ steering is light but it's nippy around town. Body lean and soft ride make for a disconcerting drive.Feel Noisy engines and wind noise combine to make the Carens a tiring place to be in heavy traffic or on long journeys.Space The Carens can fit in seven seats, so there’s room for five adults and two kids. Decent boot space of 430 litres with the rear seats folded but tiny with them up. However, fold down the seats and you get over 2,000 litres of boot space.Equipment The Carens is well-specced with alloys, aircon and more as standard.Price The Carens is very good value considering it's stuffed with kit and has a seven-year warranty. Running costs good; residuals bad.Quality Looks decent inside, a big step up for Kia interiors.Safety Six bags, ABS, brakeforce distribution all standard. Traction control an option.Pros Decent MPV for the money.Cons Indifferent engines and drive; not desirable.Alternatives Vauxhall Zafira, Toyota Verso, Renault Scenic, Citroen C4 Picasso
